I
highly recommend the experience -- Allison Colony
I was a camper for 4 years, but
that was so long ago that my first year there was Lillian
Shilling's last year as director. We also didn't have
electricity in the bunkhouses or T-houses (cold showers,
kerosene lamps for lighting at night, etc.). The only
buildings that I remember for sure having power were the
LS building, the Director's/counselor's building, the
nurse's building, and the canteen. I remember many fun
activities that year, despite not having some of the comforts
of home. Then, the next 2 years we had Brent Heath for
the director, after which the Colonel arrived for my final
year as camper. I would have continued coming, except
that with 4 kids in my family, my parents had said they
would only let us come for 4 years, then we had to let
another sibling have a turn at it. I really enjoyed my
time there - I highly recommend the experience for kids
today. I hope the camp continues for many more years to
come. |
A
Gift of Silence -- Ben Harrison
Every single
time that I've been back to Virginia in the last 20 years,
I've made a pilgrimage to Vesuvius. I've walked to Table
Rock and Buttermilk Springs and stopped in the chapel....fall,
winter, spring. Even now at age 45 I still dream occasionally
that the summer has finally come...

A
Magnificant Ancient Oak -- Betsy Delicate Bangley
Colonel Reeves
was a man as big and tough as Mine Mountain, whose heart
was as pure as the clean. sparkling water of mountain
streams, and whose company was as welcoming as the cool
sheltering woods of Buttermilk Springs in the August heat;
whose relaxed understanding and acceptance of others was
as refreshing as pure sweet mountain air...

Words
of Colonel Reeves at his retirement celebration --
21 September 1996
As
I look at all of you, I can't believe it. I went to bed
last night wondering if 10 people would show up. [Laughter.]
They did. [More laughter.] There are among this group
some of the finest friends I have ever had. When I walked
into this place 25 years ago ... this summer, I had with
me two people I knew: my daughter Nelle and George Tolley...

Reflections
on the Funeral of Colonel John H. Reeves Jr. -- Flip
Coulling
I
did not attend the visitation with the Reeves family on
the Friday night before Colonel's service, but I understand
that the funeral home was absolutely packed, with a line
that stretched around the room a few times and took an
hour or so to get through. Blair Smith told me he met
Sam Lavender's widow while standing in line...
