Brent and Becky's
Bulbs - supports Nature Camp
One easy way to support the NCF/NCA financial effort has
been developed by former Nature Camp director Brent Heath
of "Brent and Becky's Bulbs." Brent put together
a bulb collection of plants found in and around Nature
Camp and will make a campaign donation for each collection
sold. He also gave Nature Camp some terrific publicity
with the prominent write-up in his most recent catalog.
You can follow this link to the collection description
and ordering information:

Are you 70+?
For those of you who attended Nature Camp during its first
few years, or for those whose grown children and grandchildren
enjoyed it so much that youd like to give back to
Nature Camp, the following may apply to you:
Through the end of this calendar year (2007), Congress
has passed a special act allowing those who are 70 years
of age and older to satisfy their Required Minimum Distribution
from retirement accounts by giving the money to a non-profit
501(c)(3) like the Nature Camp Foundation. The distributions
will be tax-free and avoid the penalty on early withdrawals.
Your money will go directly to the charity, so there
is no income to report for the giver. This is a great
way to benefit an organization that you care about while
accruing a financial benefit.
For questions about this email the treasurer Chuck
Story, at vmi91chs@adelphia.net for more information.

Yes we take stocks!
If you are interested in supporting NCF and camp, a gift
of stock can be a great way to help, and provide some
tax relief, too!
If you donate shares of stock, your gift is the value
of the stock as of the date of the gift. You do not have
to pay capital gains on the stock's appreciation during
the time you owned it. Stocks that are ideal gifts include
shares that have been owned for many years, shares received
as part of a split, reorganization, employee bonus, or
other program that resulted in a low tax basis. Consult
your tax advisor for how the rules impact your situation.
Once you are ready to make your gift, write a letter
to your broker, and instruct him or her to transfer
the number of shares you would like to gift to:
Nature Camp Foundation, Inc. c/o Edward Jones Investments,
Account 188-09305-1-4.
Your broker can help with the exact format of the letter,
or provide you with a pre-formatted-- gift form. Or
you can email the NCF treasurer, Chuck Story, at vmi91chs@adelphia.net
for more information.

Biodiversity
by Kit Davenport, former camper and counselor
The animals and plants illustrated here represent
just a fragment of the rich diversity of life
found around Nature Camp. Each organism is
important because it is in some way linked
to every other organism and each has a completely
unique genetic identity.

Mountain
Laurel by Dot Spates Wilbur-Brooks,
former camper and staff
Mountain Laurel, Kalmia latifolia,
blooms late in May and early June along the
banks of Big Mary's Creek and throughout the
wooded areas around Nature Camp. The flowers
stamens have a unique spring mechanism for
pollen dispersal which is triggered when insects
land on the flower.

Old
Magesty by Kathy Ravenhorst-Adams,
former camper and counselor
A large old tree like this one attracts a
wide variety of animals because of the array
of food and cover it provides. Mature trees
produce fruits or nuts that feed many types
of wildlife, from bugs to turkey to deer.
Insects and fungi decompose deadwood and become
food for birds such as woodpeckers and warblers.
Cavities can be safe nesting sites for mammals
and birds who forage in nearby open areas.

Common
Yellowthroat by Ali Davenport Wieboldt,
former camper and counselor. The Common
Yellowthroat, Geothlypis trichas, is a secretive
wren-like warbler with a distinctive "witchity-witchity-witchity-witch"
call. It is found throughout the United States
and at Nature Camp and can be seen near South
River and weedy field edges and damp thickets.
This migrant spends its winters as far south
as Panama.

Redbud
Seedpods by Billie Rosenberger, former
camper
Redbud, Cercis canadensis, is a small tree
with heart-shaped leaves found along forest
edges near Nature Camp. It is common in the
Eastern half of the United States. Bobwhite
quail and a few songbirds are known to eat
the seeds which develop during the summer
after the showy springtime flowers.
